While changing the Asiatic Lions from the critically endangered species the category to species of the endangered in its red list, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at same time has too cautioned the department of the forest against the poaching threats to species.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Report stated that subpopulation of the lions is rising and is considered the stable now in the Gujarat. Number of the lions is too reported to be spreading beyond boundaries of protected sanctuary of the Gir to the satellite townships. Gir National Park is only a dwelling for Asiatic Lions in the world.

Taking the note of 200 incidents of the poaching report the further added that the constant monitoring is needed to ensure that levels of the hunting do not increase. According to the source of the forest department about 8 lions were poached in the 2007. However, red list of IUCN has in its report the stated that total 34 animals were reported the killed in the 2007. It is a very high figure because eight loins were poached in a year, a senior officer said.
Although, experts say that was a major achievement for conservation the efforts of state government. Ravi Chellam expert on Lions says, “This species is dispersing the outside protected area and its population is increasing. It was adequate to list of the lion as species of the endangered from critically endangered.
Y V Jhala, head of department Animal Ecology and the Conservation Biology said, “Management’s efforts towards conservation of species are planned with intention to the reduce threat perception towards. For the Asiatic lions, success of conservation has not only led to rise in the population of the lions but has too raised dispersal range of animals. It is indeed the feather in cap for state that even IUCN has also the recognized its conservation efforts.” He said that next aim of state government should be have animals listed as the threatened species.

Dr H S Singh, additional principal chief conservator of the forest says, The Asiatic Lion as a whole is the listed in the vulnerable category. But it is good news for state as Asiatic lion was not listed as endangered species.
