Gir National Park is Most Famous National Parks and Reserves in India


Gir national park and Gir wildlife sanctuary is also known sasan Gir. Gir national park is located at Junagadh district in Gujarat state of India. It is situated 60 KM to south-west of Amreli and 65 KM to the south east of Junagadh. Gir national park and wildlife sanctuary coveres total areas about 1412 square kilometres which is divided into two parts, one is wildlife sanctuary covering area of 1153 square kilometres and second part which is fully protected region (national park) covers area of 258 square kilometres.  

Gir wildlife sanctuary and national park is one of the most famous jungles in the world.  Full population of Asiatic Lions in the Gir national park, thus it is mainly known for its Asiatic Lions and other species of cat’s family. The gir national park was established in the year 1965. Since its beginning several private organizations and NGOs have come forward to further extend and support the Lion breeding plans. 

Before declaring as a national park it was hunting zone for royal family of Junagadh. Even being a protected region its lions population was considerably decreased due to hunting. Taking this into consideration the Lion rehabilitation program was started. This program was fruitful and lion population started increasing. At present there are near about 410 Asiatic lion according to official counting of April 2011.  

The Gir national park is full of the fauna and flora. This park is abundant of the wildlife. There are also finding of animals like Indian hare, black-naped, four-horned antelope, langur, porcupine, blue bull, jungle cats and rusty-spotted cats, jackal, Deer, leopard, sambar chital, striped hyena, wild boar, elephant, chinkara, wild dog, nilgai, monkey and much more. 

You can find 40 different species of reptile, 35 species of mammals and amphibian and 250 several species of birds. You can see large population of marsh and mugger crocodile in Gir national park. You can spot many birds which include the owlet, nightjars,  Eurasian eagle, white-eyed buzzard, brown fish, falcon, peacock, parrot, duck, swan, pigeon, and much more.
507 different species of plant cab be found in the Gir national park. The dominant tree is the teak tree in this forest. It covers about half part of this jungle. Nature lovers can see Kalam, jambu, vad, amli, charal and much more species of trees in this national park. Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is also sported by seven Rivers.

Best season to visit 

Best season visit in this national park is November to June.
